Consent and Dignity
Reading is private. Contributing is public. This is the rule the archive is built on.

A reader’s identity appears nowhere
Anyone can read the archive without an account. A signed-in reader can set moments aside and follow rooms, but nothing about a reader—not their name, not a count of what they’ve set aside—ever appears on the archive or to anyone else.

Only witnesses are named, and only on what they contribute
A witness’s public name and witness number appear on the recordings they contribute, and nowhere else. Enrolling as a witness does not make a reader’s account public in any other way.

What we store, and why
A reader account exists only so set-aside moments and followed rooms persist across visits. A witness record additionally holds a deposit agreement, a recovery method, and a recording preference.
If you send a message through the contact form, we store what you provide—name, email, reason, optional Archive ID, and your message—so we can read and respond to it. Joining the archive updates list stores only an email address, used solely for that purpose.

Respect for what is recorded
A recording documents public life and places as they naturally occurred. Nothing is staged, and no one is directed. The archive does not use advertising trackers; basic technical information may be processed by hosting and backend providers to operate the service.

Leaving, and taking your account with you
A reader may delete their account from the reading room at any time. Deletion removes the account, the moments set aside, and the rooms followed. Accessioned recordings are unaffected — they are permanent archive records and were never held under a reader's account.
